ABEOKUTA — The Olowu of Owu Kingdom, Oba (Prof.) Saka Adelola Matemilola, has announced that the Olowu Hope Initiative (OHI) reached more than 12,600 people through programmes in education, healthcare, entrepreneurship and environmental sustainability. He made the announcement at a press conference at the Olowu Palace, Oke Ago, Abeokuta, held to mark his fourth coronation anniversary.
Presenting the first-quarter 2026 report, he said the initiative supported 1,427 students, awarded ₦20m in scholarships and expanded the Olowu Scholars Programme to over 600 beneficiaries. It also secured 650 Coursera licences through a ₦390m grant. In healthcare, it renovated and equipped the Igosun Health Centre and facilitated 540 eye surgeries. It also supported 287 entrepreneurs and artisans and drilled four boreholes.
The monarch said the initiative began with personal and internal resources before attracting support from individuals, organisations and the diaspora. He defended extending its reach beyond Owu communities, saying its programmes are driven by humanitarian concern rather than ethnic affiliation. He also said the palace has held bi-monthly security meetings with security agencies and community leaders since November 2024. Ahead of future elections, he urged traditional rulers to stay non-partisan and urged eligible Nigerians to register to vote and reject vote-buying
